Almost seven years ago, I walked into Emmanuel Hospice as a nervous social work intern. I was so unsure of what I had just signed up for. One week in, I was scheduled to shadow a music therapist. We saw a patient tucked away at the end of a long, dimly lit hallway. The unit nurse reported that, despite medication changes, the patient had been restless and anxious all morning. When we got to the room, the music therapist sat down, pulled out their guitar, and began to play. At first, it sounded like a random song. But it was not just any tune. It was one that was being methodically timed to the patient’s breathing. Slowly, the tension melted away. Their face softened. Peace replaced panic. By the end of the visit, they were asleep. I was stunned. In that quiet moment, listening to the patients even and relaxed breathing, I thought, "This is what I’m meant to do."

I've had the honor caring for over 200 human lives at end of life. Now, as Education Manager, I get to teach, equip, and inspire new staff to bring the same peace and love to patients and families right here in our West Michigan Community.
